im about 6.2 170 pounds and slightly athletic build. Most of the shirts if not all, are available in M and L. IM afraid the L will be way too short for me. please guide me accordingly.

thanks for asking.
Given the weight I can say that our US L will fit you, but knowing the height, I can say that our US XL will be a little shirt for you.
This is based on general size chart we are using in our shop for normal body built (not fat or muscular). It does not guarantee 100% free of size discrepancy, as body built varies, but it works most of the time.
Here is general size info.
-US S (M) size = ~5'7", 135 lbs
-US M (L) size = ~5'9", 155 lbs
-US L (XL) size = ~5'11", 175 lbs
-US XL (2XL)size = ~6'1", 195 lbs
I think it would be better if I leave the decision to you.
