5foot 9, 140 pounds, 35 inch chest, 31 inch waist. I want a reasonably tight fit but i seem to be between the boundaries. Would you suggest i risk the medium size or simply go for the large?

Given the height and weight I can say that you can fit our US S only. Though it will be short for you for about 2 cm since the total length of US S is 63 and 65 for US M.
This is based on general size chart we are using in our shop for normal body built (not fat or muscular). It does not guarantee 100% free of size discrepancy, as body built varies.
But, it works most of the time for our customers.
Here is general size info.
-US S size = ~5'7", 135 lbs
-US M size = ~5'9", 155 lbs
-US L size = ~5'11", 175 lbs
-US XL size = ~6'1", 195 lbs
