Hi, I am 5ft 9inches tall and 165 pounds. I like slim fit clothes so I think size L (US M) would fit best. However, I would like to fit a blazer under the coat so should I go with size XL (US L) or does the size L (US M) have enough room for a blazer?

Thanks for the message.
Given your weight I can say that a US L is a better fit for you, it will not be loose or tight. but then the problem is it will be a bit long for your height since you are 5'9 only.
This is based on general size chart we are using in our shop for normal body built (not fat or muscular).
It does not guarantee 100% free of size discrepancy, as body built varies.
But, it works most of the time for our customers.
Here is general size info.
-US S size = ~5'7", 135 lbs
-US M size = ~5'9", 155 lbs
-US L size = ~5'11", 175 lbs
-US XL size = ~6'1", 195 lbs
