Hi, I am 5ft 9inches tall and 165 pounds. I like slim fit clothes and I usually wear US M so I think size XL (US M) would fit best. However, I would like to fit a blazer under the coat so should I go with size 2XL (US L) or does the size XL (US M) have enough room for a blazer?

you need to get the coat in a bigger sz than the shirts to have an enough room, but then since you are 165 Ibs, I guess a US L is a good fit.
This is based on general size chart we are using in our shop for normal body built (not fat or muscular).
It does not guarantee 100% free of size discrepancy, as body built varies.
But, it works most of the time for our customers.
Here is general size info.
-US S size = ~5'7", 135 lbs
-US M size = ~5'9", 155 lbs
-US L size = ~5'11", 175 lbs
-US XL size = ~6'1", 195 lbs
